Meet Noor: #SchoolGirlUnderBombs

I made Noor because I couldn’t stomach the weasel words Australia uses when it backs Trump and Israel’s military action in the Middle East: “We support it.” “We’re not involved.” “We can’t comment on the law.” Meanwhile, schoolgirls and other innocent civilians are dying under the bombs.

And let’s be honest: “support” isn't neutral. It's political cover. It's permission. It's complicity dressed up as diplomacy.

Noor is a simple prompt: a schoolgirl with a single book. She challenges the institutions and people who shape, defend and normalise Australia’s foreign policy. She asks one question: how far away do children have to be before our “support” stops feeling like complicity?

Noor has already been to Parliament House, the National Gallery of Australia and a few other locations around Canberra. Next she’s heading to my local MP David Smith’s office, and to ACT Senator Katy Gallagher’s office. But she wants to travel further. And it’s your turn to help her if you’d like.

If want Noor in your town, I can make and send you a hand-made Noor poster. Take her to your local MP’s office, a minister’s office, a weapons contractor, an Apple Store, a supermarket, or any place where people will see her.

Photograph her. Post her. Let her be seen. Tag #SchoolGirlUnderBombs and @LyrebirdDream.

Email me at gregory.andrews@lyrebirddreaming.com and I’ll send you details on how you can get a copy. Let’s help Noor go viral: national and international.

Thank you Greg for the powerful image and words - while in Oz we are obsessed with petrol and flight prices , Noor is an important reminder of the worst impact of the illegal war. I love her strong eyes and her fiercely clutching her book - evidence shows that a girl with books can change the world positively . 🌍 Go Noor!

Australia’s involvement in US wars must STOP.  As things stand, Australia’s defence and foreign policies are decided in secret, without transparency. Both Houses of Parliament must be required to vote before any form of military involvement, including sending weapons or aircraft parts used in war and ADF personnel. Unless Australians raise our voices against the current undemocratic process and lack of transparency, NOTHING will change.

May I suggest that letters be sent to the PM and to the Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong, stating that both the Senate and the House of Representatives must be required to vote before sending Australians or military equipment to war.
