Genocide in Gaza: So What Can and Should Australia Do?

Yesterday, I shared a story about how speaking out about the genocide in Gaza put me into an awkward and confronting situation with Israeli Embassy staff and the Australian Federal Police. I was intimidated for standing peacefully and by myself on a public footpath while making a video about the genocide.

Today, I want to go deeper and share what Australia can and must do to stop the genocide.

Over 17,000 children have already been killed. And the UN warns 14,000 more children could die in coming weeks if Israel's bombs and blockade don’t stop.

Australia can’t keep looking away. So what should we do?

  1. Call it out - Penny Wong and Anthony Albanese must publicly name it for what it is: genocide and collective punishment.

  2. Cut military ties - Australia must immediately cease all exports of weapons and military components used by Israel in its assault.

  3. Demand a real ceasefire - Not a pause. A permanent end to bombing and the blockade.

  4. Restore and increase aid - Fund UNRWA and frontline humanitarian responders like Medicines Sans Frontiers. My 84 year old mum just gave them a big donation!

  5. Stop the hypocrisy - Support the ICJ genocide case and international accountability.

This isn’t about politics or anti-Semitsm. It’s about children. And about whether we, as Australians, live up to our values and international responsibilities.

I put together this short TikTok video to explain more. Please watch it and share if it resonates with you. And please let me know in the comments if you have other suggestions beyond my five on what Australia should do to help stop the genocide.

What about trade sanctions and severing diplomatic ties?

Good idea in the sanctions. European countries, led by Spain, are now considering sanctions.

Yes, I absolutely agree, Greg.  Australia should have acted decisively and swiftly against Israel’s blatant violations of International Law. The Australian Parliament must now take a principled stand and end its role in enabling war crimes. I fully support the Red Lines Package, which is a set of legal reforms that was introduced to Parliament in 2024 and would ensure Australia is no longer complicit in genocide, war crimes, and illegal settlements. These three Bills are: the Genocide Risk Reporting Bill 2024, the Divesting from Illegal Israeli Settlements Bill 2024 and the Defence Trade Controls Amendment Bill 2024. These Bills would:

- Hold arms companies accountable

- Divest from illegal settlements

- Stop exports linked to war crimes
